Polo Shirt Do’s and Don’ts

When done right, the polo shirt can be an elegant, comfortable, and classic piece of apparel, and a good polo is a staple of any gentleman’s wardrobe. We offer a selection of high-quality polos here at Jack Jerome, any of which could become your new favorite shirt, but we also want to make sure you know how to wear them correctly. Here’s a few do’s and don’ts for this timeless, versatile item of clothing.

DO Use Color

A polo shirt is the perfect way to incorporate color into a wardrobe that might otherwise stick closely to neutrals. It’s designed to make color look classy, so don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and get a little bolder—we suggest rich purples, greens, and pastels for summer.

DON’T Wear an Undershirt

The polo was originally created as a sports shirt, and its fabric is naturally light, flexible, and breathable. Wearing an undershirt will interfere with the fit, and isn’t necessary—the fabric is thick enough to be opaque, but thin enough to be comfortable on its own.

DO Know When to Tuck It In

There are two different hems on polos—if your polo is longer in the back than in the front, tuck it in no matter what. If your polo is too long, and hangs beneath the halfway point of your fly, you also need to tuck it in—nothing looks sloppier than a long, baggy polo. If the hem is the same length in the front and back, and the shirt is short enough, you can leave it untucked if you prefer, especially when worn with shorts.

DON’T Pop Your Collar.

Ever. Don’t do it.

DO Make Sure It’s Fitted

A good polo should be snug, but not tight enough that it creases or pulls across your body. If your polo is too loose, it’ll look sloppy and defeat the youthful athleticism that usually comes with the look. The holes of the arms should be snug—the idea being that floppy sleeves won’t get in the way of your tennis swing—but never restrictive.

If you need help shopping for your perfect summer polo, come into Jack Jerome. We’ll help you find the best-fitting polo in a color that suites your complexion and personal style, and we’ll make sure you go home with a shirt that will become a new wardrobe staple you’ll love for years.
